At some point, everyone looks at someone else doing something and thinks “why are you doing that, THAT way?” If we are honest, we have probably thought that about God at times. God’s way(s) of doing things have always been counter-cultural and He does this because only He then can receive the glory. This is no different with the birth of Jesus; we see a young girl who isn’t even married and her carpenter fiancé becoming the earthly parents to Jesus the Son of God. How unlikely is that? But it gets even more unlikely as we look at the lineage of Jesus in Matthew chapter one. We see person after person who we would have never chosen to be in the genealogy of the Savior of the world.
